The Party of Religion

Democrats are complaining that too many people assume that only Republicans can be religious. Indeed, at least a third of the Republican party base is comprised of religious people.
"Democrats can be people of faith, too. They can pray out loud, they can sing hymns and invoke God's name in their speeches. They can even agree to disagree with their partisan pals on hot button issues like gay marriage and abortion."
Is that what religion is? This is why most religious people vote Republican. The Democrats (generally speaking) don't understand religious people and religious values. Religion to them is a flavor of ice cream- opinions vary by person and we should be able to get along. Your beliefs ultimately don't matter because they're only your opinion. Religion is a hobby. People go to church to sing songs and hang out with friends. Religion should have no bearing on your political and social views.
This is why the Democrat party will never have truly religious people in their party base. What I mean by truly religious people are those who believe in a historic religion and believe it's actually true. The Dems have their own religion, they worship themselves. But they will never understand someone who believes in a transcendent objective truth that dictates every aspect of life. Someone who takes their historic religion seriously will form certain beliefs that are usually antithetical to the Democrat's agenda. If, for instance, human beings are made in the image of God and therefore have unique and transcendent value, then embryonic stem cell research, other types of cloning, abortion, same-sex marriage, etc. are all immoral and laws should be made prohibiting them.
The Democratic Party in general does not understand this. John Kerry in particular does not understand this. He got upset because He thinks he's Catholic and yet was denied the Eucharist because of his views on abortion. If the Catholic church chooses to have the sanctity of life as one of its defining features, and Kerry opposes that, then Kerry is not Catholic. However, Kerry thinks that religion should not dictate our beliefs.
Earlier this week Dennis Prager was interviewing a Democrat lady at the convention. She was complaining about Bush continually citing God in his speeches and allowing his beliefs to dictate his policy. Prager asked her a legitimate question- If the President does not receive his morality from God, where should he receive it? Her response- From the people that elect him. No wonder John Kerry flip-flops. He has no absolute standard to live by, he simply follows what he believes people want of him. My response to her would have been- Then where do the people receive their morality? I suspect her response would have been humanity. If humans define morality then it is not a stable thing, it is subjective and ultimately inconsequential. God must define our morality and our beliefs in general if they are to have any true value.
